Credit in a Malay Peasant Economy ~
by author MOKHZANI ABDUL RAHIM, ,

The profitable nature of Malay moneylending continually attracts new lenders. Extensive lending and foreclosures by lenders who are generally the village rich and other high income and high-status Malays, leads to the concentration of landed property which amplifies the wealth and social differences between Malays. The pattern of credit transactions in the Malay peasant economy is neither static nor is it purely influences by a combination of religious, social, economic, cultural and legal factors acting both singly and in a combined way. However, the study demonstrates that these factors and the credit environment are themselves constantly undergoing change as both Malay society and Malaysian society as a whole evolves in the process of national growth and development.
